All About Oz

On July 4, Turner Classic Movies will present a special sing-along presentation of THE WIZARD OF OZ at 6 p.m. (ET), hosted by Robert Osborne and special guests The Powerpuff Girls from Cartoon Network’s popular animated series. The special airing, featuring printed words along the bottom of the screen for viewers to follow along with the beloved tunes in the film, is the highlight of TCM’s 3rd Annual commercial-free tribute to the timeless classic. The words that were added for TCM’s sing-along were compiled from various sources, and the lyrics are as faithful to the original sheet music as possible. The Oz tribute will also include the airing of the original documentary Memories of Oz (2001) at 7:45 p.m., which features behind-the-scenes photos, memorabilia, film clips and interviews with people whose lives have been affected by the film. For fans who are interested in viewing the film without the sing-along feature, THE WIZARD OF OZ will air unaltered and commercial-free on July 7 at 8 p.m. As part of their introduction to the sing-along version of the film, The Powerpuff Girls - Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup - will discuss how The Powerpuff Girls Movie (JULY, 2002) pays homage to the flying monkeys featured in THE WIZARD OF OZ. Winning an Oscar® for Best Original Score and another for Best Song, MGM gave special attention to the music selected for THE WIZARD OF OZ. Though many movies had musical numbers at that time, THE WIZARD OF OZ was one of the first films to use the musical numbers to help tell the film’s story. All of the songs for the film were written by E.Y. Harburg and Harold Arlen, including the signature piece, “Somewhere over the Rainbow,” which won the Oscar® for Best Song. Ironically, studio head Louis B. Mayer had originally wanted to have the song cut from the film. Other popular songs from the movie include “Ding Dong, the Witch is Dead,” “Follow the Yellow Brick Road,” “If I Only Had a Brain” and “We’re Off to See the Wizard.”
