Consider tonight's theme and then take a look at this triangle. We have an alcoholic, abusive husband, his sexy but embittered wife, and the handsome army officer who befriends them. Guess which one is going to buy a one-way ticket to the morgue?

The Depraved is a taut little British thriller which was co-scripted by Brian Clemens at an early stage in his career. He would go on to fame and glory as the creator of The Avengers TV series and the screenwriter of cult horror hits like Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde (1971) and Captain Kronos-Vampire Hunter (1972).

Anne Heywood, cast in the title role of The Depraved, certainly lives up to that reputation in her choice of film roles. While American audiences know her best as the conflicted lesbian lover of Sandy Dennis in The Fox (1968), an adaptation of a D. H. Lawrence novella, Ms. Heywood accepted even riskier roles in Europe. She played a tortured transsexual in I Want What I Want (1972), an amnesiac stalked by a psychopath in L'Assassino...e al telefono (1972), and a lustful nun in Le Monache di Sant'Arcangelo (1973). So if you're unfamiliar with this English actress, The Depraved should be an interesting introduction to Ms. Heywood's career.
