Courage. Born seven days and thirteen years apart, Paul Muni and Greer Garson share a stunning ability to portray strength in the face of hardship on screen.

Paul Muni was born on September 22, 1895 in what was then Austria and what is now Russia - not a particularly promising place for a future movie star. After moving to the US in 1902 with his parents, Muni began appearing in the Yiddish theaters and, later, on Broadway. Picked up, dropped, and then picked up again by Hollywood, Muni is best remembered by his Oscar winning performance in The Life of Emile Zola (1937). Also that year, Muni starred as Wang Lung, a Chinese farmer in Hollywood's adaptation of the epic Good Earth (1937). Earlier in his career, Muni played a tactless Mexican lawyer beset by two wealthy women in Bordertown (1935). Regardless of his characters' nationality, Muni played strong men who stood up for the civil and intellectual rights of the downtrodden. Through these roles, Muni makes clear his own belief in the difference that a single, outspoken voice can make.

A Rose for Mrs. Miniver: The Life of Greer Garson by Michael Troyan

Also an immigrant to the US, Greer Garson was born in Northern Ireland on September 29, 1908. She, like Muni, seemed to have a flair for the under-privileged and downtrodden; her first role on stage was as a Jewish tenement girl in Street Scene (1932). Ironically, she later became MGM's resident aristocrat though she herself did not particularly like the role. Garson starred in the moral-boosting movie Mrs. Miniver (1942) as an average, upstanding citizen, a role for which she won her first Oscar. Later, however, she showed her comedic side with co-stars Walter Pidgeon and Elizabeth Taylor in the 1948 romp, Julia Misbehaves. In yet another role, Garson played a free-spirited woman rebelling against her conservative husband in That Forsyte Woman (1949). Obviously, Garson was not a woman who could be typecast; she excelled at variation, playing with dignity many different kinds of women.

While Muni portrayed on screen the plights of various groups of people, Garson brought to life different types of compelling women whose situations met their times. Because of this commitment to portraying "the underdog" with determination and valor, both Muni and Garson deserve recognition, applause and honor.
