From singing to slapstick comedy, Margaret Dumont stood tall in even the most humiliating situations. The "Fifth Marx Brother," as Dumont was often called, was dignified and prudish, consistently acting the straight woman to the Marx Brothers' eternal shenanigans.
Dumont began her sixteen-year career with America's funniest family while they were still on stage, performing as the snotty socialite to Groucho's down-and-out hotel owner in the Broadway production of The Coconuts (1925). In 1929, the Marx Brothers brought their talent to the silver screen and Dumont went right along with them.
After six years with Paramount, the Marx Brothers joined MGM with Night at the Opera (1935). In this film, the unshakable Dumont cemented her role as the statuesque snob. Towering over all three of the Marxes, Dumont was given nothing but insults and dinner bills in Groucho's absurd "love making" scenes. In the follow-up to Night, Day at the Races (1937), once again the stern status seeker was demoralized when the tables were turned and, instead of managing a sanatorium, she became a patient examined by three nutty professors - the Marxes!
The same year that Day at the Races was released, Dumont sung her way through another wealthy matron role, that of Mrs. Penner in the Marx-free musical flick, The Life of the Party (1937). Dumont even held her own in the infamously all-women cast of The Women (1939), a movie which featured Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer, Rosalind Russell, Mary Boland and Joan Fontaine. Directed by George Cukor, this classy, gossipy movie about the battle of the sexes allowed Dumont to show a side to her acting beyond the ever-patient sidekick.
Also appearing in movies with the likes of Laurel and Hardy and Abbott and Costello, we have to wonder, did Dumont, the priggish scapegoat of the most famous comedy acts of her time, understand her role? Groucho Marx has claimed that she never got a single joke. Whether aware of her role or not, the "Fifth Marx Brother" completed the greatest comedic performances of her time with dignity - a dignity it was impossible for the Marx Brothers not to undermine.
