HOWARD HUGHES: HIS WOMEN & HIS MOVIES (June 27, 8 p.m.) - TCM presents the world premiere of HOWARD HUGHES: HIS WOMEN & HIS MOVIES, an original documentary which, for the first time ever, focuses on Hughes' passion for movies and rather than his interest in aeronautics. It will it explore the "Who's Who" list of his female companions including Katharine Hepburn, Ava Gardner, Bette Davis and Rita Hayworth and his goal of becoming the "greatest producer Hollywood has ever seen." In addition, it will delve into the psyche of this legendary figure and examine the experiences that shaped him. While Hughes never did achieve his goal of becoming the preeminent producer he aspired to be, his work was prolific and succeeded in being a major influence in Hollywood's Golden Era. Following the documentary, TCM will present two of Hughes' landmark films: HELL'S ANGELS (1930, 9 p.m.), the picture that elevated him to celebrity status in Hollywood and THE OUTLAW (1943, 12:30 a.m.), his most controversial movie.
FOOTWORK: DANCE IN THE MOVIES (Theme of the Month, Fridays and Saturdays) - TCM kicks up its heels for a 38-film celebration of dance in the movies presented in themed evenings such as "Classic Male Hoofers," "Sophisticated Ladies" and "Great Dance Teams." Adding to the fun are original short-form segments featuring Hollywood dance legends Ann Miller, Cyd Charisse, Marge Champion and Donald O’Connor, who are "put through their paces" by host and award-winning choreographer Marguerite Derricks. In recent years Derricks has received much attention for her work on numerous films, TV series and commercials including both Austin Powers’ movies and Showgirls and a series of commercials for The Gap. The festival will include such film favorites as: SIGNIN' IN THE RAIN (1951, June 2, 10 p.m.), ON THE TOWN (1949, June 3, 2 a.m.), BRIGADOON (1954, June 10, 8 p.m.), EVERYTHING I HAVE IS YOURS (1952, June 16, 8 p.m.), WEST SIDE STORY (1961, June 17, 12 a.m.), GOLD DIGGERS OF 1937 (1936, June 23, 10 p.m.) and STAGE DOOR (1937, June 3, 12 a.m.).
AUTEUR DIRECTORS (Director of the Month Theme, Mondays and Wednesdays) - Since the auteur theory came into vogue in the 60's, a select group of directors have been inducted into this cinematic pantheon. Their work is characterized by a distinct artistic sensibility, their films have influenced art and culture and their names are known worldwide. Join TCM for a look at the style and creative vision of these great filmmakers including D.W. Griffith’s INTOLERANCE (1916, June 5, 8 p.m.), Orson Welles’ CITIZEN KANE (1941, June 7, 10 p.m.), Alfred Hitchcock’s STAGE FRIGHT (1950, June 12, 12 a.m.), Fellini’s ARMACORD (1974, June 12, 3:30 a.m.), Sergei Eisenstein’s BATTLESHIP POTEMKIN (1925, June 14, 4 a.m.), Martin Scorsese’s NEW YORK, NEW YORK (1977, June 19, 12:30 a.m.) and Woody Allen’s ANNIE HALL (1977, June 26, 1 a.m.).
WALLACE BEERY (Star of the Month, Thursdays) - TCM fetes this versatile and unconventional leading man with a 42-film tribute. Beery, who rose from an inauspicious beginning in entertainment at Ringling Bros. circus, quickly made his way to the stage and then to Hollywood, where he finally secured his place as a star with the advent of talking pictures. He charmed audiences as a "loveable slob" in many genres from sports and crime dramas to westerns. TCM will illustrate Beery's great range by showcasing some of his most memorable films including: DINNER AT EIGHT (1933, June 8, 12 a.m.), VIVA VILLA (1934, June 1, 11 p.m.), THE BIG HOUSE (1930, June 1, 2:30 a.m.) and BARBARY COAST GENT (1944, June 15, 8 p.m.).
