PRESS RELEASE: For release September 22, 1998
TCM Tempts Viewers With LOLITA
See the Original, Sunday, October 4
On the heels of the September 25 theatrical release of the new film version of Lolita, the Turner Classic Movies (TCM) cable network will spotlight the 1962 version of Vladimir Nabokov's controversial story of the seductive nymphet, LOLITA, on Sunday, October 4 at 2:30 p.m. (ET) as part of TCM's See the Original series.
Directed by Stanley Kubrick, the original film was one of the first to confront mainstream audiences with this taboo sexuality, a theme as controversial today as it was then.
Sue Lyon stars in the title role, opposite James Mason as Humbert Humbert, a middle-aged British professor who stops at Charlotte Haze's (Shelley Winters) New Hampshire house before taking a position at an Ohio college. It is there that he becomes infatuated with Haze's twelve-year-old daughter, Lolita. Peter Sellers co-stars as a pedophile whose own designs on Lolita, ultimately lead to betrayal and murder. Nabokov's script was nominated for an OscarĘ.
