CNN: Maureen O'Sullivan who played Tarzan's Jane, dead at 87

Film Biography from the
Internet Movie Database

est known as Jane, Tarzanís scantily clad mate in several of MGMís jungle adventures, Maureen OíSullivan has died at the age of 87.

Born in Ireland, OíSullivan arrived in Hollywood in 1930. With delicate good looks and Continental manner, she played an ingenue until the studios teamed her with Johnny Weissmuller in 1932ís Tarzan the Ape Man. With Tarzan, OíSullivan lit up the screen and taunted censors with her revealing costumes. It may have been Janeís jungle costume that ultimately caused the Catholic League of decency to crack down on movie morality.

OíSullivan became a familiar face to audiences of the 1930s. She played straight to Groucho Marxís comic come-ons in A Day at the Races (1937). Other career highlights included performances in some of the studioís most dignified dramas including The Barretts of Wimpole Street (1934) with Norma Shearer, Anna Karenina (1935) with Greta Garbo and Pride and Prejustice (1940) with Greer Garson.

After 1950, OíSullivan concentrated on raising her family. Married to writer-director John Farrow, they had seven children including actress Mia Farrow. In one of her final appearances, OíSullivan turned up as a dinner guest in Woody Allenís Hannah and her Sisters (1986).
