As Saving Private Ryan and The Thin Red Line bring World War II back into the national headlines, TCM will spotlight 13 classic WWII films this August.
Among the TCM WWII titles is a film Ryan director, Steven Spielberg counts among his influences, THE GREAT ESCAPE (1963, Aug. 7, 8 p.m. ET), starring James Garner and Steve McQueen as Allied prisoners plotting their escape from a German camp; and the classic 1942 romance CASABLANCA (Aug. 9, 6 p.m.), starring Humphrey Bogart as an American saloon owner during WWII. TCM's August WWII programming schedule is as follows:
Tuesday, August 4 - VACATION FROM MARRIAGE (1945, 12 p.m.) ó After WWII service changes them, a married couple dread their postwar reunion. Starring Robert Donat and Deborah Kerr.
Wednesday, August 5 - AIR FORCE (1943, 7:45 a.m.) ó A bomber crew sees WWII action over the Pacific. Starring John Garfield and Gig Young.
IDIOT'S DELIGHT (1939, 10 a.m.) ó A hoofer and a fake Russian countess are caught behind enemy lines at the outbreak of WWII. Starring Clark Gable and Norma Shearer.
Saturday, August 7 - THE GREAT ESCAPE (1963, 8 p.m.) ó A group of captive Allied prisoners plot a daring escape. Starring James Garner and Steve McQueen.
Sunday, August 9 - CASABLANCA (1942, 6 p.m.) ó An American saloon owner in North Africa is drawn into WWII when his lost love turns up. Starring Humprey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.
Friday, August 14 - MUSIC FOR MILLIONS (1944, 6 a.m.) ó A pregnant musician awaits her husband's return from WWII. Starring Margaret O'Brien and June Allyson.
Wednesday, August 19 - THE AMERICANIZATION OF EMILY (1964, 4 p.m.) ó A British war widow falls for an opportunistic American soldier during WWII. Starring James Garner and Julie Andrews.
Saturday, August 22 - NEVER SO FEW (1960, 6:30 a.m.) ó A U.S. Military troupe takes command of a band of Burmese guerrillas during WWII. Starring Frank Sinatra and Steve McQueen.
IT'S ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER (1955, 5 p.m.) ó World War II buddies get mixed up with gangsters and an egotistical TV star when they hold a 10-year reunion. Starring Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse.
Sunday, August 23 - GANGWAY FOR TOMORROW (1943, 6:30 a.m.) ó Five people thrown together by WWII review their pasts. Starring Robert Ryan and John Carradine.
TENDER COMRADE (1944, 8 a.m.) ó Lady welders pool their resources to share a house during WWII. Starring Ginger Rogers and Robert Ryan.
ACT OF VIOLENCE (1949, 10 a.m.) ó An embittered veteran tracks down a POW-camp informer. Starring Van Heflin and Janet Leigh.
Wednesday, August 26 - GABY (1956, 1 p.m.) ó In this remake of Waterloo Bridge, a ballerina turns to prostitution when her fiancÈ is reported killed in WWII. Starring Leslie Caron and John Kerr.
Monday, August 31 - GO FOR BROKE (1951) ó The true story of WWII's all-Japanese-American unit. Starring Van Heflin and Lane Nakano.
