Screen immortality came to Jean Hagen (1923-1977) with her role as the screechy-voiced silent-screen siren Lina Lamont in everybody's favorite MGM musical, Singin' in the Rain (1952). Hagen's hilarious, Oscar¨-nominated performance in that classic Ð for which she used a voice once described as sounding like "a cement mixer in heat" Ð is so vividly remembered that it's sometimes forgotten she was a versatile actress who moved from musicals to comedy to drama with ease. Born Shirley Jean Verhagen in Chicago, Hagen began her career in radio and the stage, then made her movie debut in Adam's Rib (1949), a comedy starring Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. One of Hagen's best dramatic opportunities in films came in John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle (1950), in which she plays the wife of a small-time hood (Sterling Hayden). In Sunrise at Campobello (1960), Hagen takes on another secretarial role Ð that of Missy Le Hand, loyal aide to Franklin D. Roosevelt (Ralph Bellamy).
