Bindi Irwin was born in 1998 to Australian wildlife specialist and television presenter Steve Irwin, also known as The Crocodile Hunter, and his American-born naturalist wife Terri Irwin. Bindi made her television debut as a toddler in the behind the scenes series "The Crocodile Hunter Diaries," which detailed the couple's everyday life at Australia Zoo, a family venture founded by Steve Irwin's parents near the small rural town of Beerwah, Queensland, Australia. Beginning in 2006, the seven-year-old Bindi began filming her own show for the cable channel Discovery called "Bindi, The Jungle Girl," to teach children about wildlife conservation; when Steve Irwin was killed in a freak underwater accident while filming a segment for a different television series that same year, "Bindi, The Jungle Girl" was retooled slightly to reflect her new reality. Wanting to continue the conservationist viewpoint of her father after his death, Bindi became a regular media presence, both co-starring with Terri in her own shows and specials and making talk show appearances. One of the latter became a slightly cruel YouTube sensation in 2007 when a nine-year-old Bindi appeared on the American morning news show "Today" to perform a rather awkward rap song about endangered species. In 2010, Bindi made her acting debut in the lead role of the direct to DVD sequel "Free Willy: Escape From Pirate's Cove," followed by another lead role in the children's adventure film "Return to Nim's Island" (2013). In 2015, Irwin appeared as a contestant on the reality competition series "Dancing With The Stars" (ABC 2005- ), winning the competition with partner Derek Hough.
