As darkness descends over the flatlands of West Texas, every Friday EVENING, from September through December, a dazzling, disorienting glow, visible on the stark horizon for miles around, ignites the blackened sky. Looming over the landscape, Ratliff Stadium, the country''s biggest high school football field, overflows with 20,000 spectators, their voices raised in the trademark chant: "MO-JO! MO-JO! MO-JO!" The crowd''s jubilation rises to a fever pitch as the Permian Panthers--Odessa''s "boys in black"--take to the field like warriors in an ancient coliseum. Once a week during the fall, this town and its dreams are carried on the padded shoulders of these young gridiron heroes. The exalted players are illuminated beneath the autumnal glare of those Friday night lights; the radiant glare serves as a beacon of hope to the townsfolk of this dusty West Texas town. Since their first season in 1959, the Panthers established themselves as the most successful football program, not only in Texas, but in the entire country. Now, in the last days of summer of 1988, the Permian High School Panthers begin the season with one thing on their minds--winning their fifth straight championship in their thirty-year team history. For their coach, Gary Gaines, it all comes down to his definition of perfection: "Being perfect is about being able to look your friends in the eye and know you didn''t let them down. I want you to put each other in your hearts forever--because forever is about to happen. Can you live in that moment as best you can, with clear eyes, with love and joy in your heart? If you can do that, then you''re perfect."

Dr. Meacham is chosen along with others by the inhabitants of the planet Metaluna to do research that will help save their dying planet. However, an evil scheme is uncovered by the suspecting Dr. Meacham when he discovers the Metalunan's plan to take over Earth. Dr. Meacham then escapes an exploding Metalunan built Earth lab along with Dr. Adams only to be kidnapped while flying away in a small plane. A flying saucer wisks both the scientists off to Metaluna where they are held accountable for blowing up the Metalunan Earth lab during their escape. They later escape there with the help of Exeter the friendly Metalunan. Metaluna then self destructs and the Doctors make it safely back to Earth, which is saved from Metalunan invasion.

The apparent cause is the recapture of Army traitor Brett Halliday, who deserted to the Utes in a previous war; but Brett has a different story. O'Rourke must mutiny to save the men. He must also aid Grace, in whom Marshal Smith has both official and unprovoked amorous interests.

O'Brian becomes fascinated by the subject and wants to shoot a movie about it. He investigates himself and soon gets into danger himself.

The powder-keg situation needs only a spark to bring war, and violent bigots like Lieut. Rob Dancy are all too likely to provide this. Meanwhile, Bridger's chance of preventing catastrophe is dimmed by equally wrenching personal conflicts. Unusually accurate historically.

There's also tension with the neighbouring ranch, and when a girl on the run from her nasty uncle joins the family unannounced Chuck wonders what he has done to deserve all this.

Although they're not thrilled, they enter the competition. Meanwhile Mrs. Fielding's son Tom makes eyes at Peggy, unknowing that her heart already belongs to a famous football star. So she tries to redirect his interest to her sister Susan.

Virginia Grey stars in a musical produced by Hall and sings (possibly dubbed) "Makin' a Million" and "Keep Your Chin Up." No spoiler to add that Ryan gets a boyfriend and Hall and Allbritton are reunited before this one runs it course.

In a desperate attempt to get a job for Ken Daniels (Allan Jones) and Alvino Rey (Himself) and his Orchestra (themselves), agent Mike Simms (William Frawley) plots to make Daniels a missing heir. Simms hires Austin J. Caldwell (Gus Schilling) to pose as an attorney and go to Gus Borelli (Leo Carrillo), owner of the swank Blue Room, asking if he has heard about Daniels' inheritance. Borelli, figuring he can cut in on the money, bright Daniels and Simms to the Blue Room just as Pamela Mason (Kitty Carlisle) is rehearsing some songs with Zybisco (Sig Arno) and his string quintet. Simms refuses to let Daniels sing with the quintet,saying he has already made arrangements with Alvino Rey to bring his orchestra and the King Sisters (Alyce, Donna, Louise and Yvonne King) into the Blue Room. This causes Pamela to lose her job and she is furious with Daniels, who tells her he will get her a job with the Rey orchestra. Later, she discovers the hoax tells Borelli, who sets out to kill Daniels and Simms. They, and the orchestra, manage to escape just as the Blue Room is filling with customers drawn by Borelli's heavy advertising of Daniel's debut. He sends Pamela to bring them back.

Will any of his dreams, involving Joan and disaster, come true?

An Army jeep is forced off the road by fleeing bandits. Sergeant Dick Manson (Don Terry), his kid brother Jack (Gene Garrick), and Corporals Frenchy Devereaux (Leo Carrillo) and Andy Jarrett (Andy Devine) follow and are joined by a posse of deputy sheriffs. Three of the robbers are killed in a shoot-out, but one of them, Al Bennett (Don Porter), escapes after wounding Jack, who dies. Bennett figures a perfect hideout would be in the Army, and becomes one of the recruits assigned to Manson. He gets into trouble because of his attitude, and particularly with Manson when he gets the Colonel's daughter, Helen (Elyse Knox), into covering up his A.W.O.L. G-Men reveal that some of the bank money has been passed at a local jewellery store. When Manson learns that Bennett has given Helen a gift trinket, he jumps at the clue, and drives her down to question the jeweler. They find him murdered. At the Army war games, Bennett blows up a bridge and several men are killed, and he diverts the blame upon Frenchy and Andy, who are court martialed for negligent homicide. Manson discovers a witness who identifies Bennett as one of the bank robbers.

Carrie (Diana Barrymore), ambitious young actress and her manager Mike Kilinsky (Andy Devine), travel east from Chicago to Long Island so Carrie can see the new mansion that her mother Chris (Kay Francis) has just purchased. Chris is not there when Carrie arrives by Gallagher (Ethel Griffies), the family major domo, tells Carrie that Chris is in love with the very rich Steve (John Boles.) Chris confesses to Carrie that she has lied about her age to Steve, claiming to be 31, and that the photograph of Carrie is Carrie's (non-existent) Aunt Sadie and Carrie is only twelve. Carrie insists that her mother keep up the masquerade, and she will pose as a 12-year-old. Steve arrives and brings with him his friend Jimmy Blake (Robert Cummings). More than a little confusion follows including Carrie starting a fight with another "kid" to keep Jimmy from keeping a date with his fiancee and Mike escorting Chris and the "under-age" Carrie to a night club, and other incidents that only tend to prove that Steve and Jimmy aren't the brightest bulbs shining. Diana Barrymore is better as the 12-year-old than she is later playing Joan of Arc in a Detroit theatre, where the light finally dawns on the perplexed Robert Cummings character.

His younger brother Danny (Tom Brown) quits college and forces Phil to make him part of the gang. The overly-ambitious Danny fixes a prize-fight on which rival gang-leader Mike Luger (Jack La Rue) loses heavily and, thinking that Phil has double-crossed him, sends gunmen out to kill Phil. They kill Danny instead and the frightened Phil flees to a country hideout. His chief lieutenant, Sid Travis (Frank Jenks), sets a trap for Phil when he returns.

A seaplane departs for China.
