When his daughter Theresa brings her new boyfriend, Simon Green, home to meet Percy and his wife Marilyn, he is unaware that Simon has already proposed to Theresa and plans to announce the engagement at Percy and Marilyn''s 25th anniversary party. As far as Percy''s concerned, no man will ever be good enough for his baby girl and the long line of struggling-artist types Theresa has dated so far has only served to bolster his conviction. So that there are no unpleasant surprises this time around, Percy, a bank loan officer, runs a credit check on Simon. The young man, a successful stockbroker, certainly looks good on paper, and for the first time, Percy is actually looking forward to meeting one of his daughter''s boyfriends. However, the young man he has envisioned--a dazzling combination of Denzel Washington, Colin Powell and Tiger Woods--is not who arrives at his doorstep. Percy is aghast and more than a little indignant when his daughter presents her decidedly Caucasian boyfriend. Once he is over his initial shock, Percy begins interrogating Simon about his family history, education, career, and favorite sports. Feeling pressured to impress his prospective father-in-law, Simon boasts of his (nonexistent) past as a NASCAR driver, which only serves to arouse Percy''s suspicions. Regardless, Simon''s repeated attempts to make a good impression are futile. Percy rebuffs him at every turn and makes it his mission to expose Simon as a fraud and undermine his daughter''s new relationship.

Pecket and Jenny together decide to take care of Nella, when she receives a telegram from the War Department advising that Jeff is missing in action. To console the young girl, Pecket tells her they'll sail out to a wonderful island he knows about where he is sure Jeff can be found. The widow March, incensed about gossip she hears that Pecket is entertaining women guests on his boat, sells it to Mr. Agrippa, who wants to make a hamburger stand out of it. He has a man install wheels on it and plans to tow it away the next day. Pecket, Jenny and Nella have a meeting on the boat, a storm blows up, and since the sails are set, the "Sara March" puts out to "sea,", where it becomes "reefed" in a haystack. A young itinerant dentist, Howard Williams (John Ireland), offers to tow them but runs out of gas just as they reach Dignman's Ferry. He suggests they launch the boat, and all hands, including Williams, who comes in handy when they encounter a scientist in need of dental work, set sail on an enchanted voyage for Pecket's rendezvous island..to find Jeff.

Abie's Irish Rose (1946) as Composer
Anne Nichols updated her original play by moving the time to the (then) present by starting the film with the V-E Day celebration in London, but no fundimental changes otherwise. This first film from Bing Crosby's production company (known as Bing Crosby Producers, Inc. and not as Bing Crosby Productions) was released in the US with a "General Audience" classification (and not the unknown-in-1946 classification of "Unrated") and starred newcomers Joanne Dru (Rosemary Murphy)and Richard Norris (Abie Cohen) in the roles defined in the title. Their respective fathers and mothers are none too keen on Abie and Rosemary's oil-and-water romance, and get even less keener when the two are married by a Protestant minister, a marriage that is quickly done again by a Jewish rabbi and then again by a Catholic priest. The contrast between Yiddish and Celtic dialects and religious practices is also maintained. Providence lends a helping hand at the end to effect the reconciliation of the fathers to their respective children and the choice they have made.
