Biography CLOSE THE FULL BIOGRAPHY

Political cartoonist who began making imaginative and technically innovative animated shorts for Gaumont in 1908 and is credited as the creator of the first regularly appearing cartoon character, "Fantoche." Cohl also made "Baby Snookums" cartoons in the US but, ill-at-ease with newer techniques, ceased filmmaking in 1918 after returning to France in 1914. Destitute and forgotten, he died at age 81 when his long beard caught fire. Finally recognized years later for his contribution to cinema, the Emile Cohl Prize, for excellence in animation, is awarded annually in France.
