Very good noir tho no femme fatale
- Patrick Keenan
Great looking noir thanks to master cinematographer John Alton. Use of sewer system reminiscient of THE THIRD MAN . Basehart is perfect in this role. Film was basis for Dragnet show.
Are you kidding, Jack Web's character nearly, in his playing with enough nitro to blow up the whole building and end the movie early. Didn't they realize how dangerous Nitro is back then? Who was the technical adviser for that film?
Great Movie Underrated ! Five Stars !

Richard Basehart is the Nice Looking Killer. The dark qualities of the cinematography make it a film worth more than one viewing, it is easy to miss specifics. The "bad guy" is not stereotyped which is somewhat odd. He scams police and acquaintances with his nice boy looks but he's a "cold blooded" killer. Much of it is done with narration (but the narrator) is quite good and it works, it also allows tight framing. Scott Brady looks much like his brother Lawrence Tierney and he plays a tough cop (and adds much). I really like this film and find it to be top notch with very little which is standard, repetitive or predictable..
Little-known grandfather of police procedurals
Neat little B-movie gem with great acting and terrific "noir" camerawork. Much better than Dragnet ever was and holds its own with "The Naked City".The one-line synopsys overview doesn't do it any justice. (Who writes them, anyway?) WATCH IT!
Good movie; well worth a look.
A mediocre screenplay is made interesting by the brilliant cinematography and directing. Wonderful movie, in spite of the lackluster acting and poorly developed screenplay. The mood of the film is quintessentially film noir!
He Walked by Night
Excellent film noir directed in the documentary style of Dragnet (also starring Jack Webb). Exhibits the early use of forensic science in criminology.
