Befriending Jimmy Stewart
- Will Fox
Prototyping personality plus previewing 1950's hilarious "Harvey," 11 years before in 1939's "Destry Rides Again"-- decent, demurring, folksy Jimmy Stewart was already talking stories naturally, presenting peace patiently, being inclusively kind, and befriending folks. In "Harvey" he has these qualities and is fueled by dipsomania into walking and talking with mighty tall hare and an Academy Award-winning nanny, nagging him about home-life proprieties. "Destry Rides Again" is the perfect preview for strong willed, Wonder Women whipping mousey men in 1939 and since. Hits too close to home for me, when wily wife tongue-lashes two-legged beasty, bearing bountiful burdens. When she says, "Just do everything I want. Then nobody will get hurt!" Why whip with words? Man-ipulated males murmur meekly, "Whoa western woe-man. Whose fierce fantasy is this? When will working women pay the bill?" Not in "Harvey." See it, to believe it. Actually, "Harvey" is one of the most amusing and enchanting films ever, encouraging everyone to patiently love other individuals, as we want to be loved genuinely. "Harvey" and "It's a Wonderful Life," are both Jimmy Stewart message movies, marvelously embodying empathy and sincere caring for folks all around us. Jimmy is a time-tested, proven winner as a role model. There is only one other greater, supreme being truly personifying loving kindness more consistently throughout time. So let's emulate them and encourage and invite other people to WatchTCM with us. Thanks TCM for lifting our spirits so often with enlightening screen gems. Cheers!

Harvey is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. James Stewart as the quiet, humble and very charming Elwood P. Dowd, is at his best. He is so charming as the slightly offbeat bachelor who is befriended by a six foot rabbit named Harvey, that he convinces everyone to his side. He may drink a bit too much and he may drift through his day, but he loves life and the people he meets. He brings joy to every one. There is a cast of wonderful actors and actresses including Josephine Hull and Cecil Kellaway who bring immeasurable talent and humor to this film. I've seen this called a "light hearted film." It's much more than that. It's a story with a life lesson. Elwood tells us that his mother once told him that a person must be "Oh so smart or oh so pleasant. For years I was smart and I chose pleasant. I prefer pleasant." And so will anyone who is fortunate enough to see this movie. Oh, Harvey deserved an Academy Award for best supporting rabbit. He's just wonderful.
what you make of it.
if someone could choose a world like this or a world like the one in this story..movies like this do not reflect the real world. they show the one people really want.
Jimmy Stewart's favorite film
Jimmy Stewart often said tat this was is favorite movie because the cast was so outstanding and they had so much joy making th e fit and because the message of the movie is universal. I truth, its message is just as endearing today as it was when the movie was made. Josephine Hull is absolutely brilliant. The scene where she describes the painting on the wall (not realizing it is a painting of a six foot rabbit) is hilarious. She adds quality to any film she is in. Cecil Kellaway as the befuddled MD who operates the sanatorium is just perfect. He portrays how own warmth and I always feel a bit sorry for him when Harvey opts not to remain with him. Wallace Ford as the wise cab driver who recognizes the beauty and innocence of the many patients when they are first brought to the sanatorium and the tragedy of their personality change when they return him saves the day for Elwood P. Dowd--Stewart's character. I would love to be Elwood P. Dowd. He genuinely likes everyone. He is kind and considerate an endlessly respectful of everyone he meets. He is totally without pretense. And he has a six foot three inch tall invisible rabbit for a friend. And why not. Somehow it is all rather believable. And it is certainly inspirational. As the film conveys its message it does so with great warmth and joyful humor. Stewart is just remarkable in this movie. He is Elwood P. Dowd. And he mirrors every single one of Dowd's personal qualities and brings that gentle dreamer to life. I love this film.

James Stewart does well with an invisible 6 foot rabbit going around with him in "Harvey". Elwood P.Dowd is the only one who can see Harvey the rabbit and that makes his sister a little mad and she wants to commit him to a mental hospital but as it happens she is the one who gets committed. Josephine Hull won an Oscar as Elwood's sister who has a tough time with the six foot rabbit. This is a light comedy storyline and Jimmy Stewart did well with stories like this in his career.
Delightful Film - James Stewart's Best Performance
A simply delightful film - I think Mr. Stewart's best performance, and Ms. Josephine Hull is just adorable as the aunt. I couldn't stop laughing - from beginning to end. Too bad it wasn't shown during 31 days of Oscar as it deserves repeated airings.

A lighthearted adaptation of the Broadway play. Stewart earned a Best Actor nomination for one of his best performances as a drinker whose companion is an invisible, 6' tall Rabbit, Hull won an Oscar as his sister who tries to put him in a mental hospital. Always funny & sweet without overdoing it on sentimentality. A good comedy that's a must for fans of Stewart. I give it a 4.5/5.
Harvey is One of My Favorites
The movie HARVEY is one of my favorites. It brings back the days of innocence and honesty. There are so many memorable quotes that I love in this movie. This is a must see for all fans of old movies.
- Mr. Blandings
While there is probably no other actor who could have - or should have - played the role of Elwood P. Dowd, I don't find the movie itself to be all that good or full of any positive sentiment. In fact, there is a streak of negativity and even nastiness to it. From the cruel and lecherous antics of the sanitarium attendant, to the worthless bar hopping of a man with an imaginary drinking buddy, there aren't any characters one can care about. At first glance, the theme of a person who has lost touch with reality being allowed to live as he pleases, so long as he is happy and harmless, might seem a good one. But ultimately it fails on that level, too, when "Harvey" is taken from the metaphorical representation of freedom of individuality to that of a real entity who can clearly open doors and gates open by himself.
Hare raising fun
- Jarrod McDonald
It's a cute film...seems more suited to television by 2010 standards...certainly not a Cinerama epic. The play's dialogue can get overwhelming and it's best when see those moments of Jimmy walking around and interacting with the scenery. Or when we see Josephine Hull's reactions. But I really did like Jesse White's work in this one...he nearly steals the show, especially in the barroom scene. The chemistry between Jimmy Stewart and Charles Drake has a sexual quality to it, and that can either add to the picture or detract from it.
Jimmy Stewart has made so many memorable films, add "Harvey" to that long list. This one is among his best, and he is perfectly suited to the role. A classic in every sense of the word. It has a good moral, wonderful performances, and it never fails to entertain. Funny and moving. Well directed and written.
GENTLE SPIRIT - PLEASURE TO WATCH
Jimmy Stewart was absolutely perfect for the role of Elwood P. Dowd, friend to all, especially Harvey the very tall rabbit. He is so gentle and thoughtful, always letting everybody else pass through doorways first and presenting an extra kind touch with Harvey. He does such a great job that every part of this movie is believable, never feeling like you are involved in some farce. Recommended viewing for one and all!
Harvey one of my favorite movies
- Angie Patton
I watched this movie for the first time a couple of months ago. I was enthralled by it. Jimmy Stewart's character was amazing-and even how he acted with an invisible rabbit was amazing. I just love watching the older movies. The movies today don't even compare to the movies that were produced back then. This is definately one of my favorites.angie
HARVEY--I LOVED IT!
I'm watching it now for the very 1st time. While I love Jimmy Stewart, I always thought how I could hardly be interested in this film about an invisible white 6' ft rabbit. Well, I laughed so hard my belly aches. I've been in the floor for the entire movie. And the actress who played Jimmy Stewart's aunt was simply wonderful. She certainly deserved the academy award for her performance. I will certainly watch it again when it comes on next week(October 25th). If there's anyone out there who hasn't seen it, don't miss it. Thanks, TCM.

If you want to be happy
Elwood looked at life the way he wanted it to be, pleasant, full of friends and love for everyone. His attitude toward life was his salvation. I forgot what a wonderful story this is and what a great actor Jimmy Stewart was.I can't wait to see it again.
My favorite Jimmy Stewart movie
Harvey is the movie I play when I need to be cheered up - it invariably brightens my mood, and brings a smile to my face. James Stewart is my favorite actor, and while I love many of his movies, this stands out as my favorite. It is just a simple, sweet, funny movie, played by a wonderful actor who is capable of playing any part, but just seems at home in this role. And from what I have read, it was one of his favorite roles, as well.Recommended highly.
This was such a great movie. James Stewart is wonderful and believable.Gotta see this flick...really funny and poignant.....Luved it.
This is the kind of movie that just makes you feel good about life."...well for years I was smart, I recommend pleasant, you may quote me."
