Kinda fun, although certainly not as good as Don Siegel's other NYC crime drama, "Madigan", for the main and simple reason that it's mostly concerned with being a vehicle for Clint Eastwood rather than, say, a gritty, urban film about interesting psychos, low lifes, and cops. Biggest casualty is Don Stroud's character. That bit at the end where Coogan offers this sociopath a cigarette would argue that there is more to him than just a punk scumbag, but Herman Miller, Dean Reisner and Howard Rodman's rather limp screenplay does not explore the guy's character and so an interesting ending is wasted. Other characters who fade from the consciousness include Lee J. Cobb's police captain, for whom we wait in vain to have a sharp exchange or indeed any kind of relationship with the title character, Susan Clark's terminally dull "love interest", and Don Doyle's poolroom...what? Crime lord? Drug Dealer? killer? Miller, Reisner and Rodman never let us know. Paradoxically, for this male chauvinist wet dream of a movie, it's a couple of the females who come off best in the personality department. Talking of course about Betty Field, an actress I usually abhor, playing the mother of all nasty mothers and Tisha Stirling as a sadistic, promiscuous hippie. And Siegel, the master of fast moving action, does deliver the goods, especially, as Ben Mankewiecz noted, in the great poolroom brawl. So, let's give it a B minus for Siegel's nonstop pace and some fine location shooting near...where else?...Coogan's Bluff.

Sorry but pretty cheesie acting and story line plot. Love Clint Eastwood but this being one of his own films...pretty bad.
Clint gives New york 24 hours, to get out of town!
Deputy Walt Coogan (Clint Eastwood) travels to New York in order to extradite a priosner, but gets red tape thrown in his face by NYPD Lt. McElroy (Lee J, Cobb) while the prisoner, Ringerman, is recovering from an LSD trip. Coogan attempts to teach the New Yorkers a thing or two, but looks like he is in over his head more than once.Having to deal with Ringerman's ditsy mother and wacked out girlfreind is more than Coogan can tolerate, but he gets his prisoner, more or less in spite of everything that he has had to deal with. Loks like Clint took everything he learned from Sergio Leone and put his own twist on it.
Under appreciated Siegal/Eastwood Gem
Very under-appreciated Eastwood flick. The premise: Take Clint, pretty much have him play his usual character that we all love...then stick him in New York City circa '69 (along with its open minded sixties sentimentality) tracking a violent club hopping hippie and his friends, plus you know... slow him down with all the usual bureaucracy and letters of the law big city B.S. that Clint just don't have much appreciation for and boom...result: kick butt flick.

when seen over the air, scenes were added into film, language was cut out, when watched on cable like cinimax, whole scenes were cut out, but language was left in, when purchased on vhs, scenes were completly taken out, language was not.movie is good, but have never saw a complete edition of movie, so I considerate it incomplete. movie is sort of like the t.v. series mcloud,with dennis weaver, coogan's bluff stars clint eastwood.
