The people who like this movie are fans of yule-tide logs burning on video. Why do i say this? This movie was filmed in almost the 'exact' version of the Broadway play. The plan was if 'Top Banana' was a big enough hit then all Broadway shows would get this treatment. Unfortunately the excitement of live performers and risque ad-libs by this excellent cast made this show a hit live. It did not translate on celluloid. The constraintsof the film making process led to something even the producers could not envision, static performances by all.My best description would be watching this movie is like eating a melted banana split. It tastes somewhat good but oh wouldn't it be great if the dessert was frozen! Most of the negative has been lost and the version shown is from a 16 mm print so the quality is below so-so. 'Top Banana' looks like a two color technicolor print from the 30's. For you techies, a huge red shift a la the 1970's!Sound - goodPicture - poor

What a fun film! Right off, I was really impressed with the sets and costuming even before I read that it was filmed in 3D. The outlines piped onto the costumes had such a surreal effect along with the beautiful colors. The sets worked great with the colors and costumes even wihtout 3D glasses. It would have been great for other films to be filmed and staged in 3D with these colors and outlining even if 3D glasses were not used. Phil Silvers, whom I watched as a child was shining as the real showman he was. Anyone who likes early song and dance and vaudeville should really like this movie. It is a carefree ride.
