After suffering years of poverty and ridicule because of their experiments in medical hypnosis, Professor Monserrat and his wife, Estelle, perfect a method of obtaining control over the mind through use of a mesmeric light machine. Anxious to test the invention, Estelle persuades her husband to find a suitable subject. At a nearby coffee bar, he meets a bored young man, Mike, who has quarreled with his friend Alan over the affections of Nicole, the woman they both love. By promising Mike a psychedelic experience, the professor is able to lure him to his house, where the experiment proves more successful than Monserrat and his wife had hoped. Monserrat intends to use his discovery to help elderly people relive the experiences of youth, but Estelle sees more selfish opportunities in her husband's invention and persuades him to make Mike steal a fur coat for her. To satisfy her craving for excitement, she makes Mike beat up Alan and then brutally murder two girls. When the police set out to find him, Mike tries to escape in an automobile. Summoning what little will power he still possesses, Monserrat causes Mike's car to crash, killing not only the young man but himself and his wife as well. [One source indicates that Professor Monserrat survives the crash.]
