Favorite movie of all time!
Maybe not the best movie ever made, but it sure is a lot of fun. Saw this in the theater when I was 6 and no other movie has made such an impact on me. I've seen it hundreds of times in the past 40 plus years...still see something new on each viewing. Great cast, amazing special effects and set decoration. To me, this is the ultimate survival film...there have been remakes and parodies, but nothing compares to the original classic.
Best of the '70s Disaster Films
The first and best of the disaster films of the decade. It was because of this movie that the term 'disaster film' was coined and used back in the 1970s. 'Poseidon' still holds up today.
let us hope it does not happen.
other than an adam sandler movie festival sponsored by carnival cruises..the worst disaster involving a cruise ship in the history of film.
first movie I ever saw at a drive in
I saw this movie The Poseidon Adventure when I was 5 years old and I LOVED IT. I even cried all the way home after I saw Shelly Winters died. I have it on VSR,BETA FORMAT OF TAPES. I watch it every NEW YEARS EVE and I try to time it when the tidel wave hits midnight...I think it's one of the best movies I ever saw. The remake Beyond the Poseidon Adventure is ok,but,The Poseidon Adventure is the best... I saw it at the Drive In in Antigo Wisconsin and I thought it was a big thing especily when I was only 5 years old. I can't wait for this News Years Eve so I can it again on TV ON TCM at 4 pm Happy HolidaysJ.S.WISCONSIN
The Poseidon Adventure
- Michael Whitty
One big disaster film that almost didn't get made but thanks to some clever arm-tugging did get made. The good luxury liner Poseidon is on its last trip through the Mediteraneon sea when a 90 foot tidal wave capsizes it and turns it upside down. Those that are alive are left to go from the top to the bottom of the ship to get out. Gene Hackman, a minister, leads the way as we later see different passengers not be able to make out. Producer Irwin Allen, who produced other disaster-formula films, went on to make a bigger hit with "The Towering Inferno" later. Allen, who produced several TV shows in the 60s with characters in trouble and having to find ways of getting out, was a "master of disaster" showing people that "you're never dead until you're dead".
Its a disaster.
My bias toward "disaster films limits my ability to give this film any more than one star, although some would receive D a higher rating. So many stars, some going up, and some at the ends of their careers, tons of money for special effects, and the ratings of those who like these types of films, their is no plot except self preservation. The characters are all caricatures. In particular the "rock" band with Carol Lynley is so bad, there is not doubt they didn't pay a real voice. I saw it in the theaters, with a group who liked it. I started watching it at home with someone who wanted to see it. Fortunately, I could claim I had something to do, and did it without suffering through the "disaster".
The Poseidon Adventure
Along with "The Towering Inferno," this is one of the best Disaster films of the '70's. A group of survivors try to survive after their luxury liner is capsized; Hackman won a BAFTA and Winters won a Golden Globe. Won Oscars for it's Special effects and for the song, "The Morning After;" now dated, but still compelling. Campy, but entertaining. I give it a 4/5.
