Bogie's always great, but Liz Scott was better in "Pitfall" and "Too Late For Tears." In this one her acting is kinda stiff and one note. And that song she lip sings is a real clinker! Also, the subsidiary characters are a forgettable bunch and the only scene that lingers in the mind is the one in the morgue. Which is where this film belongs. Give it a C minus.

Lizabeth Scott has got to be the model on which all other femme fatales from the noir genre were based. She is, by far, the most evil of them all in this film. You sort of fall for her at the beginning of the film but your illusions are soon put to rest. Bogie's performance, even with some rather suspect dialogue at times, is top notch here, as the vet trying to investigate the death of his best army buddy. Make no mistake. Dusty (Scott) is a stone-cold murderess but Bogie still falls in love with her. His feelings become conflicted during the film but are summed up neatly later when he is asked by Dusty if he loved her. He simply says he loved his buddy more. btw: As of this date, 15 November 2013, Lizabeth Scott is still alive and 92 years young.

Dead Reckoning is a taut, well-written film noir that keeps the viewer on the edge of his or her seat. Quite frankly, I had a hard time myself determining if Coral Chandler was as cold-blooded as she seemed to be. It isn't until the end of the movie that you realize that the hail of bullets was as much meant for Rip as for Martinelli. I've had my own copy for many years and never tire of it.

Not only is Bogie the star he also narrate's his anti-hero's journey to find out what happened, and why, to his war buddy and what a narration (top-notch, along w/ the rest of the script)!Ya' just don't mess w/ Bogie! Also, Ms. Scott is as smokey and alluring as in any of her films!

This is one of my favorite Bogart movies. I love the dialogue and Bogart's performance.
