A glamorous London model is found shot to death and her flat ransacked, and police Inspector Birkett and his assistant Sergeant Saunders are assigned the case. They find some clues, the hidden gun, a ballpoint pen, and a diary entry, which informs them that the woman was being blackmailed by her neighbor David Dane, a television star. They also discover that she was a drug addict, leading Birkett to speculate that the murderer might be a dope smuggler. Further investigation, however, proves him to be wrong, although his suspicions help to crack a narcotics ring. After the murder of David Dane, Birkett and Saunders pursue and capture the drug traffickers, but none of them is the killer. Finally, the dead girl's mother, Mrs. Gray, confesses under pressure that, jealous of the attention her second husband paid to the daughter she had always despised, she killed her with her own gun.
