Love this film and watch it everytime it shows because of Macready. He was rather stagy in his acting, but had a pleasant enough face,so I don't mind the exaggerated mannerisms.Lon Jr is another matter.Bev Garland thought the most of him,she and Richard Crane who played Paul giggled a lot thru their scenes,tongue-in-cheek acting from all.Frieda Inecourt, who was sick with multiple sclerosis by this film, deserves credit for even appearing here,as she seems to be trashed everywhere for being so belligerent, and why wouldn't she with a son disfigured from experimentation which saved his life.Macready and the swamp buggy are my favorites, role and prop.He appears about 25 minutes into film, joined cast half-way thru filming,IMHO,a much needed boost to production,as the other doctors are totally wooden.
No real horror, just what happens if scenario, considering how destructive wars in Middle East have been to our service persons, not too far fetched.I really cared about all but the 2 doctors,Kennedy and Bennett, and am a Bennett fan.Too wooden as the doctors, but loved Macready's doctor for his humanity, and toned down stage mannerisms, and he was still pleasant to look at,no matter what, until his health broke in 1967,then he was really short of breath/dyspneic and deserving of compassion and consideration from some who trash him on social media today.
A Good Film
Not even Chaney's demented handyman can mess up this film.Good performers all, surprised that Macready really won me over here, liked him best and Ms Frieda Inescort, did they work together before?
Really Good "Horror" Film
The only horror related anything is Lon Chaney as the crazed Cajun, who unleashes hell at the wrong time, destroys whatever hope Mark Sinclair's experiments with cobalt to restore his patients to more human form causes.Really must say I loved the scenes between Frida Inescort & Macready.Ms Inescort suffered from MS,and showed great dignity throughout. And I think Macready showed that in real life and here that he was a decent, king gentleman and it showed thru simple gestures.I watch this film regularly,as I now have the dvd,and am truly surprised at what could've been schlock really made me care about all the characters, except Lon's maniac. And I do Like Chaney, always did.
Lon Chaney,Bev Garland,Macready,Bennett,Kennedy
No bad actors in this film. Not the greatest makeup on the gatormen, but didn't expect anything else.Really thought this deserves praise, great cast, decent story, very empathetic George Macready as doc who uses gators to help heal severely injured accident victims. Then things take a bad turn, and what could become a terrible horror film becomes a touching story.Suspicion is put to rest, and a daughter-in-law is welcomed into the home.
The Alligator People (1959)
- James Higgins
Entertaining as well as hokey, but I do enjoy these 1950's horror sci-fi films. This one has a better budget than most, and some fairly well known actors too. The make up and special effects are pretty good, especially when considering the year it was made.
