Wonderful film. One of Jolson's very best.
Not a typical Jolson film, but a superb portrait of New York at the bottom of the depression with all of the political and social upheaval of the era in full view. Jolson plays Bumper, a tramp who is "the mayor of Central Park" and he is supported by the great Frank Morgan and Harry Langdon (in one of his most successful sound roles) as the Communist tramp warning of an upcoming revolution. Music by Rodgers and Hart. This film is a real gem!
I love this movie. I saw it as a child in the 60s because a friend's mom had it on reel to reel and showed to us neighborhood kids on rainy days along with other classic movies. I was thrilled to stumble across it this morning after all these years. A great film all around -- sweet, funny and terrfic in it's pre-code freedom and NYC slice-of-life feel. My friends and I wanted to live in Central Park.......and I was a 'bum' for Halloween for years because of this film. Al Jolson, the Wizard of Oz and cast are wonderful.
hallelujah im a bum
its been dubbed the great experiment ( film) in recent years. leave it to al jolson to pioneer(as in the jazz singer)and gamble on a new idea.1933 movie goers were not ready for this kind of dialog in rymn.time would show it could work successfully,as in the wizard of oz and the music man. al jolson shines in this film.although the songs were not mega hits his energy lights up the screen.recently someone said, sadly al jolson has been forgotten.i can tell you hes still well remembered.
A Must See for Pre-Code Fans
This is an extraordinary and highly entertaining film of the early depression period. From a social history point of view it is absolutely fascinating. Anyone interested in the Great Depression will find this a rich and rewarding experience. It is also full of great songs and well acted by all. The exceptionally beautiful Madge Evans shines in an all too rare leading role.
