Jim Hale and his chum, Fuzz, travel to the border at the request of Jim's stepfather, Olliver, to take over the half of a ranch left to Jim by his mother. On the way, they meet Helen Green and her assistant, Pat, whose herd has been stopped at a pass by the Brady gang. Jim agrees to help Helen get through the fence which blocks her route to market. Jim and Fuzz go to a saloon, where they hope to meet Olliver. Ed Brady entices the two men into a crooked card game, and when Jim realizes that the game is fixed, a shootout ensues, leaving Ed and the bartender dead. The two men escape with the help of Tom Brady, who hides them in a cellar. Tom hires Jim to keep Helen from crossing the pass. At first, Helen believes that Jim has double-crossed her, but he convinces her that he will blow up the fence which blocks the pass. Brady suspects that Jim is Olliver's stepson and he and Fuzz are taken captive by some of Brady's men. Held captive along with Fuzz and Olliver, Jim learns that his stepfather bought the Canyon Ranch after Brady drove away the owner and then was taken prisoner by the Bradys who planned to force him to reveal his hidden money. The three men escape and lock Brady in their cell. They tell Olliver's story to the sheriff, and then Jim rides out to the pass to dynamite the fence. During a shootout, the dynamite explodes and Helen drives her herd through the pass. Brady escapes, but Jim pursues and captures him. Jim asks Helen to start a cattle ranch with him, and Fuzz promises to oversee both their cattle and their children.
