  • Classic 1950s action drama

This film is based on the tragic 1949 Mann Gultch fire in the Montana mountains. "Red Skies of Montana" was first viewed by many baby boomers on NBC-TV's Saturday Night at the Movies series; many have become avid fans ever since. And what's not to like about this classic early 1950s film? Superb use of rugged Montana locations, well-staged action scenes (including acting during a real, controlled fire!), and solid performances with Widmark, Hunter and Boone in the leads. This is a good old-fashioned he-man's movie. A very big thumbs up!

I remember this movie from my childhood. I cannot recall all of the details but, remember it had a good plot, good actors, allot of action & great outdoor scenes with wild land fire (real old "actual" footage). The movie is somewhat based on actual events of the tragic Mann Gulch fire, which overran 16 smokejumper firefightersin 1949. I do not understand how a great movie like this one with so much demand, can be unavailable for so long...Too bad.

Richard Widmark, in another worthy performance, elevates this otherwise ordinary actioner about the sky jumping fire fightersof the Northwest. Good drama and fine support from Jeffrey Hunter and Richard Boone. Fine out door cinematograpy and good action highlight this worth while early Fifties vehicle highlighting popular leading man, Widmark.

Good action movie of the "smoke jumpers" fighting forest fires. Great outdoor scenes showing forest fires (technicolor). Good performance by Richard Widmark.
