Gloria Endicott, daughter of the New York Clarion 's largest stockholder, has reporter Ross Graham fired in order to force him to marry her. When Ross realizes Gloria was behind his dismissal, he goes to Harry's Bar and, in a drunken stupor, accepts her proposal on the telephone as revenge. When their engagement is announced in the morning paper, Ross's real sweetheart, reporter Kay Duncan, takes poison, but survives. Ross tries to convince Kay he does not remember calling Gloria, but she refuses to see him. Kay covers the engagement ball for the Clarion society pages and meets successful songwriter Pete Maitland, who earlier was rejected by Gloria. Kay greets Ross and pretends to be engaged, causing Ross to swear false love to Gloria. At the wedding reception, Kay's friend, Carla Anderson, exposes Kay's scheme to Ross, who admits he still loves her. On their Palm Beach honeymoon, Ross tells Gloria his true feelings, and they decide to maintain an amicable, but platonic marriage for the sake of appearance. Meanwhile, Kay and Pete fall in love. When the Clarion creates a scandal around Gloria's marriage, Gloria believes Kay wrote the story, but Carla admits she did it to avenge Kay. Ross then moves in with his reporter chum, Bill Harvey, while Kay and Pete are secretly married. Mr. Endicott's bank folds and he commits suicide, leaving Gloria with nothing. She gets a job as a fashion artist, but is eventually dismissed, while Ross makes his name as a movie critic and playwright. Months later, Gloria goes to Harry's Bar to search for Ross and is taken in by Kay. Ross appears at Kay's and announces that his play has been bought in Hollywood, then takes Gloria home to the Endicott estate, which he has just purchased.
